A young woman was allegedly raped at the annual Tropika Vaal Beach Party at Dickinson Park in the Vaal last week, and told to lie about the crime scene to protect the image of the event.
The 24-year-old married woman, who cannot be named as she is a victim of a sexual crime, said she was raped at Dickinson Park but that event organiser Isaac Masia allegedly told her to lie to the police about where the incident happened.
“He told me to say the incident happened at Dick Fourie [Stadium] because he didn’t want it to reach the media because it would affect his brand,” the woman said.
Masia, who owns Masia Sound Productions, denied all the allegations against him, saying that he was the one who clarified the rape location to the victim’s husband when the man called him for clarity.
“She lied to her husband and said the rape incident happened at Dick Fourie while it happened at Dickinson Park. We don’t know whether she was raped or it was her boyfriend because she was in and out of the toilet the entire night,” said Masia.
Event sponsors, dairy giant Clover, said they viewed the incident and the allegations against Masia in a serious light.
The company’s Jacques van Heerden said: “We are deeply distressed to learn of the allegations of sexual assault following the Tropika Vaal Beach Experience. As the naming rights sponsor, we are not usually involved in the operational aspects of this event. However, it is an urgent priority for us to investigate the incident which has only just been brought to our attention.
“To this end, we are proactively engaging with the event organiser, Masia Sound Productions, and will do everything in our power to assist the South African Police Service with their investigation into the allegations. We sincerely sympathise with all victims of sexual assault and violent crime. Safety and security is of primary concern for Tropika and our top priority is to ensure we establish how this incident may have occurred and address it immediately.”
Police spokesman Fikile Funda confirmed that the woman had opened a case of rape against an unknown man and investigations were under way. When asked about the allegations that Masia influenced the victim to lie to the police, Funda said they would investigate the allegations, and if there was foul play, they will take action against those responsible for defeating the ends of justice.
“We have not arrested the suspect yet,” he said.
The woman, who was employed by Masia to clean the VIP section, said the incident happened around 4.30am.
“I went to the toilet around 4.30am to relieve myself when a tall man wearing a black jacket got into the toilet and told me to shut up, pointing a knife at me. He unzipped his pants and raped me without using a condom. When he was done he told me not to dress because he wanted [to do it] again. When he was done he told me to get dressed then went out and closed the door. When I went out he was nowhere to be seen. I immediately told my bosses what had happened,” she said.
